According to a study published in 2020, the prevalence of hip pain in the general population hovers around 10% and increases with age. This may not sound like a lot, but it can be quite bothersome for those who suffer from it. Your hips are essential to every function, including sitting, standing, walking, running, jumping, climbing, and practically every other physical activity imaginable. Hence, those suffering from hip pain typically experience a severely decreased quality of life.

When people think of chiropractic, typically the first things that come to mind have to do with the spine, back, and neck. While chiropractic care does treat these areas, there are other ways that we can help our patients. For example, hip adjustments are a great way to maintain your body’s natural alignment and keep it running in tip-top shape. But what exactly are hip adjustments? What should you expect during your appointment, and what benefits can you expect as a result?

First, let’s discuss some common causes for hip pain. While your spine is responsible for holding your head and torso upright, your hips bear the brunt of your weight and the force behind it. If you have a chronic condition such as arthritis or tendinitis, or you have suffered an injury that caused a fracture or muscle strain in the hip, then you may find it difficult to put your weight on it. You may walk crooked or limp to ease the pain in your hip.

To begin treatment, a chiropractor will typically ask you to fill out paperwork detailing your medical history and the reason for your visit. This is followed by an x-ray, so that you and the physician can get an idea of what and where the problem is. X-rays are also a great way to track progress over time. A chiropractor may prescribe stretches or other secondary therapies before the actual adjustment. During an adjustment, the patient lies on the table as the chiropractor gently manipulates the skeleton back into proper alignment. It’s not unusual to hear a pop or crack as tension is released and your body realigns itself.
