This week I want to talk to you about sleep. I don’t know about you, but sleep and I do not have a very good relationship. This is not uncommon for adults with chronic disorders or even people who lead hectic and stressful lives. Even kids are now showing signs of poor sleeping habits. While some studies say that it is because of electronics, others say it is because of the high level of pressure that is being placed upon them by schooling habits at such a young age. Whatever the reason may be for a lack of sleep, we can all agree that it kind of stinks. Here are a few ways that you can try to get to sleep and stay that way.

1. Get The Right Pillow. One problem that many of us have is an insufficient pillow. This can increase neck pain and back pain which will keep us tossing and turning all night until we find a comfortable position, which is reliably about five minutes before our alarm goes off to get into work the next day. Try to find a pillow that keeps your head parallel to the bed instead of too low or too high.

2. Cool It Down. Many people like to sleep in a cooler room, and they just may be onto something. Scientists say that having a bedroom that is somewhere around sixty five degrees is optimal, although other estimates say that sixty eight or seventy is where you want the thermostat. Either way, find what works for you and see if cooling down the temperature can help you stay asleep.

3. Tune Out. If you’re like me, this will be the most difficult step. I like to sleep with the television on, but scientists say that this is not a good habit to be in. Turning off all electronics including the television and the cell phone is a good way to make sure that you get to sleep and stay that way, as electronics give off blue light which disrupts the natural human circadian rhythm.

Another thing that keeps many people awake is pain. If this is your problem, then come into DiBella Chiropractic in Gastonia and see if a spinal adjustment can help you feel better when it is time to lie down. Just make sure you get home before you try and fall asleep!
