As someone who suffers from headaches and migraines, I am here to tell you that it is not a good time. Migraines are actually much more common than most people think, with more than 37 million people suffering from them in the United States alone. Out of these, two to three million people suffer from chronic migraines, which means they suffer from migraine symptoms at least 15 days each month for three months or more. Almost five million people state that they have at least one migraine headache a month. With statistics like these, it’s crazy to think that we don’t talk about them more.

Migraines do affect women more than men with 18 percent of women suffering as compared to about eight percent of men. Evidence has also been shown that migraines may be genetic as those with family history tend to be more likely to suffer from them as well. Generally, migraines will be seen more often in Caucasian people of lower income groups between the ages of 35-55, however anyone can suffer from migraines.

While migraines are often thought of as “bad headaches”, this is only partly true. While migraines do often cause head pain, this isn’t always the case. Light and sound sensitivity, nausea, dizziness, vision changes, and other symptoms are often seen in addition to the head pain which can be general or localized. Atypical migraines sometimes have few to none of these factors but are still important to seek medical attention for. You should always see a doctor if you are having new or extreme symptoms of any kind, including headaches as it may be a sign of a more serious issue.

If you suffer from migraines and headaches, there have been studies done which show that chiropractic care may be beneficial to you. The release of tension and stress from the areas around the skull and spinal cord may help to relieve pressure which can act as a trigger for these painful and sometimes disorienting episodes. Migraines and severe or chronic headaches can severely disable you if they are bad enough, so come into DiBella Chiropractic and get an adjustment to see if it offers any kind of relief. You may just be amazed at how much good it does. It will certainly help the rest of your body feel better too!
