According to statistics presented by the National Library of Medicine, roughly 80% of people around the world have been or will be affected by back pain. This percentage far exceeds even the most serious conditions, making it one of the most common ailments in the United States and the world at large. When a person is experiencing pain, typically their first instinct is to go to the doctor’s office for a check-up. Better to be safe than sorry.

But what if there was another alternative? A doctor’s office is well-equipped to evaluate overall health and wellness, but there are other specialists who are better equipped to diagnose and treat localized pain. Plus, an appointment with a general practitioner may cost almost double the amount charged for a visit to a specialist like a chiropractor. Chiropractors are especially helpful for patients who are experiencing debilitating pain or weakness due to misalignment of the spine.

When it comes to cost, chiropractic care is much cheaper than a visit to your doctor’s office. A single chiropractor appointment may start as low as $30 without insurance, depending on the treatments and tests that are performed. A general practitioner will charge roughly $80 or more for a single visit. Those who qualify for Medicare are covered under Part B (medical insurance) of the plan. In these cases, the patient pays 20% of the final medical bill. This coverage includes both doctor’s visits and chiropractic appointments, though Medicare will not pay for anything beyond the cost of spinal manipulation.

According to The Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, replacing a visit to the doctor with a visit to the chiropractor when experiencing back pain could save Medicare $83.5 million annually. It makes perfect sense when you consider the facts: chiropractors are cheap, efficient, and they have a specific skillset built around comprehensive knowledge of the spine. For the 80% of the world’s population that is suffering from back pain, chiropractic will save them money while offering relief from symptoms. Not only that, but a cheaper copay means that the federal government is saving money on Medicare as well.
