Pinched Nerves - Gastonia Chiropractor

Pinched Nerves - Gastonia Chiropractor

A pinched nerve may just sound like a tiny inconvenience, but it has the ability to heavily impact everything you do. The pain and multiple other symptoms that are associated with pinched nerves can, and often do, cause debilitating issues. While some people can work through pain for a while, many find themselves to be either bed bound or at least need to cut back on their physical activity with a pinched nerve. This obviously isn’t a sustainable treatment, especially if you still have to go to work or take care of someone. Being diagnosed with a pinched nerve doesn’t have to be frightening, but you do need to have a grasp of what your actual treatment options are.

Pinched nerves happen due to an excess of pressure that is applied to a specific nerve by the surrounding muscles, tendons, cartilage, and/or bones. This pressure can cause different problems in the area which can impact your movement, no matter how active you normally are. Pinched nerve pain isn’t something that can go away on its own, either. If you have symptoms that last longer than a few days, you should definitely see a doctor and call DiBella Chiropractic. If you aren’t sure what to look for if you think you may have a pinched nerve, here are a few of the common symptoms you may experience:

  • Muscle weakness in an isolated area
  • Pain that feels either sharp or aching, which often radiates out from a specific point
  • Numbness or decreased sensation in an isolated area
  • Tingling, or a feeling of “pins and needles”, as if a limb has fallen asleep
  • Any of these symptoms getting worse at night

In order to be diagnosed, you may have to go through a series of tests that your doctor can order. These are normally imaging tests or electrical pulse tests which help your doctor determine if the issue starts in your nervous system. From there, you may be prescribed physical therapy, medication, or even surgery depending on how severe the damage is.

If you would like to see what treatment options you have before you immediately turn to surgery, give us a call. We are here to help you feel better regardless of whatever nerve issues you may have. We know how painful a pinched nerve can be and will do everything we can to help you feel better, so call us as soon as you can!

Bulging vs. Herniated Discs - Gastonia Chiropractor

Bulging vs. Herniated Discs - Gastonia Chiropractor

Normally when we hear something about a back disc issue, we hear the term “disc herniation”. While the term “bulging disc” is also used, most people don't seem as familiar with the phrase or with the difference between the two. It can seem like the difference between them doesn't really matter, but we can assure you that from a treatment standpoint, they do. To understand the difference, it is important to remember what you know about the spine itself.

The spine has multiple parts that you need to know to understand the difference between herniation and bulging. Let's start by talking about the part between the vertebrae that acts as a cushion so the bones don’t rub together. This is called the disc. The disc itself has two separate parts, called the nucleus and the annulus. The nucleus, as you may be able to guess, is the center. It is soft and often compared to jelly. The annulus is the exterior part of the disc, and is a bit tougher. This is because it has to protect the nucleus from the vertebrae. Sometimes, however, the annulus cracks or gets a tear in it. When this happens, the nucleus can “seep” through and cause pain. If it hits a nearby nerve, it can cause anything from pain to numbness in almost any part of your body. This is a disc herniation.

Bulges, on the other hand, are caused by normal wear and tear to the disc and are often seen even if the person with one doesn't feel any pain. The main difference is the type of displacement that occurs between a bulge or a herniation. Without getting too in depth, there is actually less displacement from a herniation than there is a bulge, and yet the pain is more intense. This isn't to say that disc bulges should be allowed to continue to get worse, however. After all, anything involving your back will more than likely become serious after a short period of time. It is always a good idea to get it looked at sooner rather than later.

If you believe you may have a herniated or bulging disc, or are looking for an alternative to suggested surgery, call DiBella Chiropractic as soon as you can. We know that it can be difficult to find time in your daily life, but when it comes to your back you should never leave things to chance. Come in today, you may be amazed at how much better you can feel!

The Long Term Effects of Whiplash - Gastonia Chiropractor

The Long Term Effects of Whiplash - Gastonia Chiropractor

One of the most common conditions when we're talking about car accidents is whiplash. We all know that whiplash is a bad thing to experience, but what exactly is it? Will it go away without needing treatment? What kind of treatments should you look into after you're diagnosed? There are dozens of questions you may have about whiplash, but they don't generally get asked until after you have been told you have it. While we obviously hope that you never experience this injury yourself, we also believe that it's a good idea for people to know about different types of injuries, so here are some basic whiplash facts for you.

Whiplash is an injury specifically of the neck that occurs when there is a sudden and quick movement of the head from front to back, much like the motion of the end of a whip when it's cracked. This often occurs during a car crash, but it is also sometimes seen in sports injuries and in different kinds of abuse. A case of whiplash often sees the victim dealing with neck pain, stiffness, and headaches. Symptoms also may include loss of movement, memory issues, tingling or numbness, tinnitus, fatigue,  irritability, dizziness, trouble focusing, blurred vision, depression, tenderness,  and sleep issues.

While it is always a good idea to see a doctor after being in a car crash, it is even more important to seek medical attention if you develop any of these symptoms. Most people who develop whiplash can mostly self-treat it as it heals, which usually happens within a few weeks. However, you do want to see a doctor so they can make sure the pain you're experiencing isn’t caused by something more dangerous, such as muscle damage or a broken bone. It is increasingly important to get medical care if you have had whiplash before, are older, or have a pre-existing condition. Even if you think your case of whiplash will go away on its own, it's always better to get the all clear from your doctor so you know everything is okay.

Getting chiropractic care after a car accident is one of the best things you can do for your body. If you were injured during a crash of any kind, give DiBella Chiropractic a call and let us help you with your pain. We will do everything we can to get you back up and on your feet the way you were before the accident!

All you know is that your neck hurts a lot and you to feel better. How and Why We Treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Gastonia Chiropractor

How and Why We Treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Gastonia Chiropractor

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is not something anyone wants to be diagnosed with, but sadly it is becoming more and more common. Carpal Tunnel is a condition that causes pain, numbness, and tingling in the arm that continues down the hand. These symptoms are caused by the median nerve, which is one of the main nerves that travels through the wrist to the hand. When it is compressed or pinched in the wrist for an extended period of time, you can end up with severe pain and discomfort. This pain often gets worse the longer it goes untreated, so early diagnosis is extremely important in treating and curing it if you don't want to put a pause on your daily life. If caught early enough, carpal tunnel can often be treated with a simple wrist brace or cutting back on certain movements and actions. However, if it is left untreated and the causative activity continues, the damage will only get worse. It may easily reach a point where surgery is needed to reduce the pain and pressure that is affecting the nerve. Carpal tunnel will not get better on its own.

There are multiple theories as to why we are seeing such a sudden increase in carpal tunnel diagnoses. The most widely accepted one states that people are spending more time on computers. Typing on a keyboard requires a certain position of the hands and wrist which has been shown to cause an increase in the pressure that is put on the wrist. This is why you often see people use cushions under their wrists on both their keyboards and mouse pads. Although this small piece of foam won't completely prevent carpal tunnel, it is definitely a good idea to keep as much pressure off your wrists as possible. Keeping your wrists elevated is a good way to reduce the strain that the medial nerve often has to deal with. While there are other factors that can cause carpal tunnel, such as family history and other health conditions, anything you can do to prevent the disorder is worth it.

If you have been experiencing any sort of numbness, tingling, burning, or pain in your hand and wrist, especially around your thumb or middle fingers, call DiBella Chiropractic right away. Headaches and Migraines

Headaches and Migraines

According to the WHO, headache disorders are among some of the most common nerve related disorders in the world. In fact, it is believed that over half of all adults have had at least one severe headache in the past year. This means that if you have recurrent headaches or migraines, you are definitely not alone. These types of disorders are not only common, they are sadly debilitating. In fact, headache disorders were ranked the top third reason for Years Lost to Disability (YLD) in 2013. To further complicate matters, headaches are rarely the only problem brought on by headache disorders.

Many people who suffer from headaches and migraines also deal with issues like anxiety and depression. This is at least partly due to the concern of when a headache will strike and derail plans. This affects family, friends, and work obligations and may actually impact your ability to lead a typically active life. If you have severe enough headaches, you may even qualify for social security disability. Having a headache disorder can most definitely interfere with what it most important to you and that often leads to frustration and other negative feelings. Regardless of the specific kind of headache disorder that you have, we understand just how isolating they can be.

There are dozens, if not hundreds, of different kinds of treatments that are available for headache disorders. Some people find that medication works for them while others try multiple types and never find one that works for them. Some people swear by acupuncture. Others still just use rest and a cold compress across their forehead to help combat the pain that can be caused by noise and light sensitivity. Dealing with the additional symptoms, such as nausea, can sometimes be easier than the original cause.

If you are interested in trying out another method of treating headaches and migraines, give DiBella Chiropractic a call. Regular chiropractic care has been shown to help relieve the frequency and severity of headache disorders over time. It may not be the most common treatment method, but with a non-invasive technique and no medication, we have one of the lowest risk systems you will ever find. When it comes to headache disorders, you won’t find anything that is quite like chiropractic care. Set up an appointment with us and see how much it helps. You have nothing to lose but the pain!
